Leadership record

Executive accountability and board service

Two decades running an institution and a decade before that leading group-level social investment, with governance experience on both sides of the boardroom table.

2003 to July 2026

Chief Executive Officer

Zenex Foundation, Johannesburg

Set grant-making strategy, funding priorities and partner due diligence for an independent endowment-funded education grant-maker. Owned endowment governance and stewardship, aligning investment oversight and spending policy with the education strategy. Led an executive team across programme, finance, grants operations and communications, with a programme budget of about R100m and 14 permanent staff.

Built Zenex into a trusted government partner. Led a pioneering multi-donor collaboration supporting government’s Foundational Literacy and Numeracy strategy and pioneered co-funding partnerships with international donors. Championed monitoring, evaluation and learning across the sector, culminating in the first accredited course in education evaluation at Stellenbosch University.

1993 to 2003

Consultant, Head of Foundation, then General Manager

Absa Group, Johannesburg

Held group-level responsibility for corporate social investment across education, community development, arts, culture, heritage and HIV/AIDS, with a R150m budget and a team of 17. Pioneered an award-winning Employee Involvement Programme that raised about R4m a year for HIV/AIDS initiatives. Introduced a group-wide grant-management system that strengthened accountability and board reporting.

The foundation was recognised as Absa’s best-run corporate foundation and rated by an independent BMI survey as the sector leader in community development. Before Absa, a career in social work, community research and university teaching.

Governance

Both sides of the table

Gail has governed as a senior executive accountable to a board and as a non-executive director across philanthropy, education, not-for-profit organisations and a government research agency. The combination brings strategic oversight together with a practical understanding of executive accountability and of the line between governance and management.
